The answer is always... YES!!
REFLECTING ON MY READING HABITS
Have a look at the images and think about your own reading habits. Have they changed?
1. What kind of books or texts are the people reading? Did they chose the books themselves or did someone else choose for them?
I think all of them are enjoying what they are reading, just for pleasure.
Picture 4 reveals a guided reading, as we can see all students holding the same book (red colour, identical pictures...)
In picture 5 we can find a man who is more interested on world news than in an Agatha Christie novel.
The most impressive for me is number 3. She reminds me of my granny Luisa. She died three years ago at the age of 96. It was fascinating how she learnt new technologies. She used tablet, mobile phone, computer... I always felt very proud of her.
Picture number 2 is absolutely charming. I'm sure one of them is beginning at the reading-writing process.
Picture one shows us a public library, where anyone has the possibility to read a book. It's impossible to guess the purpose of all of them... a university project, get immerse in an epic story...
3. Describe how they might be feeling at the moment and give reasons.
From my point of view, numbers 1,3 and 5 feel really comfortable. They are reading what they really want to read. It doesn't matter the environment: a public library, at the street or at home.
On the other hand, numbers 2 and 4 are more guided (as I said before). Related to the students picture, it depends on each child. The boy sitting next to the girl that is wearing glasses seems to be distracted. The boy behind her is like a book worm and he could be enjoying a lot.
4. Focus on one or two of the photos and say how they relate to your own experience as a reader in L1 (Spanish) and L2 (English or another foreign language). Think about the following things:
- What texts do you enjoy reading in each language that you speak?
I love reading books or news related to History or adventure stories.
- Do you choose the same kind of texts or do you read very different things depending on the language? What factors determine your choice?
When I read I don't mind the language of the text (English or Spanish). I think that reading in a different language opens your mind and gives you the opportunity to learn more and new curiosities about the cultures and the world in general.
I like reading texts related to medicine but I admit some words are so technical and difficult to understand.
- In what format do you read (paper, e-reader, online etc.)?
I daily read in online format but sometimes I read paper ones too.
- When do you read?
My best moment to read is before going to sleep. It's the most quiet one!
I also use to read in rainy days or in long journeys when I travel to different places (in the plane, train...)
